In the UAE we wish everyone season's greetings. There are people of all religions here, but the country is alight with national day celebration lights, reminiscent of Christmas, and the stores remind us in the usual way with incongruous snowmen etc that this is a good time to spend money. Dear Webheads: The advent of electronic greeting cards has, I suspect, caused the same kind of misgivings as the advent of the typewriter. How much is "gained" by the ease of new technology and how much is lost by the reduction, or elimination of the old?

The examples are too so obvious, and now, very nearly "too" personal.
Last week my brother bought me a Kindle and for two days I let it sit in the box. How could I "give up" that which is most dear to me -- not just the pleasure of a "real" book or a "real" newspaper or a "real" magazine, but (especially in the case of books, the ownership of it. (Not to mention the pleasure of gifting a book that you
yourself had read.) Yesterday, I received the electronic card available to you, below, with a simple mouse click. It came from one of my best friends who only a few years ago had never visited a web site.

The result? I love the Kindle, and won't go anywhere without it at my side. The card? Bear with me -- here are my thoughts.

Did the electronic card bring me more pleasure than one personally selected and purchased for anywhere from $1.00 to $4.00. Then snail mailed, with 50 cent stamp, for arrival in my post box. All that trouble, all that cost, then the nice, nice touch: a hand written note suitable for safe keeping, suitable to bring a novel sense of discovery for grand kids long after I have left this world. It's hard to imagine that electronic cards can "match" these kinds of benefits...even with all the costs.

Yet, I am not so sure. The card selected, as you can find when you go to the server, is very, very fun. The interactive component, and the images, and the music could not possibly be "matched" by any "regular" card sent to me the "regular" way. I had a hard time keeping back a tear.

Anyway...if you are still with me??? -- here is the point.

All this brought me to the Webheads where I continuously marvel about the work you do. What seems like a long time ago -- 15 years? - I became convinced that the largest gains of "the new tools" would come to the most important sector of society -- to those teaching and those learning. Shucks! Isn;t that just about everyone everywhere --- or if not, then why not?

This is a long "introduction" to a short wish: Happy Holidays, Dear Webheads. May each and all of you have a Great New Year. Enjoy the card. And, perhaps, do as you often do --- select YOUR favorite card and send it to all of us by the "magic" of Yahoo.

In October, I moved to Saudi Arabia to work at Yanbu University College. Guess what? I thought about "webehads" the minute I laid my eyes on my new teaching schedule "Educational Technology" course was among other linguistics courses. I was told that only last year this course started, and it was not a success. Now, I am nominated for the position of the e-learning Coordinator for the female campus.

And now, as part of introducing my students to synchronous tools, I asked Buth to present about her projects with her students, as we share the same context in some way. She accepted! The presentation will be at Ellumiante next week.
Thank you for everything that you've done for me, for my life, my career. You were there to help me whenever I needed you. For all the dreams you made come true...I'll be forever thankful!

Happy New Year from Sydney, where it is now 8:30 am. I saw a firework session for children around the Harbour Bridge from East Balmain (peninsula)at nine pm and then met friends at Camperdown (higher up on the hill) , from where we watched the midnight spectacle from the hill. Fabulous!
We've had wonderful weather until now - sunny days, blue sky and light breeze - starting to get a tan. Aussies are friendly and welcoming and making a lot of new friends here and meeting Michael at the end of the month in Melbourne for the Linux Conference, where I will be talking about the Webheads, EVO and Social Media in ELT.

Webheads were a turning point in my life. Discovering computers was the first really significant turning point in my professional life, where I discovered that EFL did not have to be all drill and practice. But discovering Webheads (discovery in the sense of stumbling on something that was there all along) was the turning point that helped me to realize how to truly USE those computers.

 I have been in Brussels since Thursday where I received the
European Union International eLearning Award 2007. It was a
Gold Prize, I believe in the category of "the school of the
future". I must say that I blocked out when I saw the CALL
sessons 2005-2007 blog on the big screen and I don't remember
a word of what was said. There was suspense till the lastminute
about who was winning what! A mini Oscar Ceremony!!!! ;-)
I was given a chance to say how honored I was with this award,
above all, to dedicate the award to my students in the project
and to all the dear BaWers and WiAers who participated in it. The
ceremony was very nice. There were 13 finalists from Iceland
to Israel. We were referred to as "a group of excellence who
was doing amazing work" by the President of the jury. A very
pleasant Gala dinner on Thursday closed our very exciting day.

Thank you once again to all those who participated in my project
and to these two wonderful communities, BaW and WiA, without
which this award would not have been possible.

First you and an opponent each take a hard-boiled egg. Each person holds the egg -pointy side to pointy side, round side to round side- and hit them together. The egg that brakes is the loser. You can use the other side and try it again or find another opponent.
Then, of course, you eat the egg!

On the Sunday we have Easter. We hide Easter Eggs and Chocolate rabbits. The kids search for the eggs and the rabbits. We play a game with eggs, called " Eiertütschi " Two Peoples take cooked eggs and hit them together. The loser is the player has a brocken egg.

XB is an abbreviation from Church Slavonic and certain Slavic languages for the traditional Orthodox Easter greeting: Khristos' Voskrese! (Christ is risen). The X and B are from the cyrillic alphabet: X is for a sound that is similar to the Spanish jota and B is about the same as an English "v."
The XB is commonly used in things associated with Easter, even by those with a Slavic Orthodox background who no longer use Church Slavonic or another Slavic language in their worship.

I used to make dozens of "the real thing" (real eggs decorated in the Ukrainian and Carpatho-Rusyn style) every year before Easter. I put them--together with special foods like kulich and Pascha (kinds of bread), a sweet-cheese dessert also called Pascha, an egg cheese called hrutka or yayechnik, Polish sausage (kolbasá), hrin (grated horseradish, usually mixed with chopped beets), and other special foods--in a large basket with an embroidered liner and cover. I then took the basket to church on Holy Saturday night to be blessed. After that, there was always a special brunch (held VERY early on Easter morning) in which the special foods were shared. Good memories!
